The book contains three long stories. Their protagonists are (click
each for an excerpt):
- Asa, a female-to-male transsexual in the
process of transitioning. In the beginning of the story, he has
just returned to his ex-girlfriend Emily, who he inexplicably left
two years ago. The story follows the re-development of their relationship
and his transition.
- Gordon, who has lived with his mother
in Walton, Nebraska until the age of 30, and then moves to Chicago
when he's casually offered a job.
- Miriam, a middle-aged woman divorced
two years ago, with teenaged twins and a mother dying of cancer
who has recently moved in with her. Miriam, who never worked outside
the home, now works as a ticket-taker in an aquarium.
